Carbolife Handrims
The best in the world

ABOUT CARBOLIFE – in their own words . . .
“Improving the everyday mobility and quality of life of wheelchair users with the help of our products – this is what motivates us. With this goal in mind, we – four engineers and friends – founded the Dresden based company CarboLife in 2013. The initial impetus towards giving serious thought to the mobility of wheelchair users came from joint activities and conversations with a wheelchair-riding friend. These occasions opened our eyes for the development potential of handrims to improve the mobility of wheelchair users. Against this backdrop, we developed our CURVE handrim. It owes its perfect ergonomic fit to the imprints we created using modelling clay and which ideally represent the natural anatomy of the hand.
Striving towards our goal to offer every wheelchair user the handrim tailored to their individual needs, to date we have developed a range of innovative handrims in close cooperation with wheelchair users, physiotherapists and specialist dealers

GEKKO

Gekko push rim: revolutionary in ergonomics and design. The perfect ergonomics and outstanding design of this push rim makes it one of our most popular choices. Engineered and made in Germany by CarboLife.
Who is the Gekko push rim suited for?For wheelchair users with complete hand function with either complete or limited hand strength.
What are the advantages of the Gekko push rims? Its perfect ergonomics and outstanding grip properties along with its low weight make the Gekko push rim a unique, revolutionary handrim. The robust replaceable rubber strip, which is fully integrated into the profile, further enhances the exceptional handling quality of the handrim creating unrivalled riding comfort for you. Additionally, the anodised low-friction surface at the sides prevents heat generation during braking. The Gekko push rim is one of the best products on the market right now.

Curve

CURVE handrims – perfect ergonomics with each propulsion.
Based on the natural anatomy of the hand, the Curve’s ergonomically optimized profile guarantees a controlled and effortless grip, while stabilizing the wrist.
Full control with Curve – the ergonomic push rim for active wheelchair users. Engineered and made in Germany by CarboLife.

Who are Curve push rims suitable for?For wheelchair users with complete hand function.
What are the advantages of the CURVE handrims? The innovative profile enables you to gain controlled, low-effort grip while stabilising your wrist. Compared to conventional handrims, the hand muscles tire less and so help to reduce cramps and relieve pain due to carpal tunnel syndrome creating a relaxed and lasting riding experience.
What is the manufacturer’s recommendation in terms of profile size and coating?Wheelchair users with small hands should use the small CURVE profile. If you have normal-sized or large hands, we recommend choosing the larger CURVE L profile. Those who enjoy fast downhill rides in higher temperatures should use the anodised surface.

Two push rim sizes are available:
Weighing just 470g, Curve Large is a very lightweight, ergonomic hand rim. Available in anodized aluminum, with a black, matt finish. With its height of profile of 31 mm, Curve L is especially made for average and large hands.
Weighing just 330g, Curve may be the world’s lightest ergonomic hand rim. Available in anodized aluminium, with a black, matt finish. With its height of profile of 24 mm, Curve is especially made for smaller hands.

Curve Para

Our CURVE PARA GRIP – perfect in the winter and for users with limited hand strength.

Who are CURVE PARA GRIP handrims suited for?
For wheelchair users with complete hand function with either complete or limited hand strength.

What are the advantages of the CURVE PARA GRIP handrims?
The ergonomically perfect profile enables you to gain controlled, low-effort grip while stabilising your wrist. Compared to conventional hand rims, the hand muscles tire less and so help to reduce cramps and relieve pain due to carpal tunnel syndrome creating a relaxed and lasting driving experience. The 2-mm thick hard plastic coating also serves as heat insulation in low temperatures and so turns the CURVE PARA GRIP into the perfect winter rim.

What is our recommendation in terms of profile size?
Wheelchair users with small and normally-sized hands should use the smaller CURVE PARA GRIP profile. If you have large hands, we recommend choosing the larger CURVE L PARA GRIP profile.

Curve Tetra

More Grip, More Power! The special slip-resistant coated aluminium push rim with an ergonomic design. Engineered and made in Germany by CarboLife.
The CURVE TETRA GRIP will take your mobility to a new level.
Who are the CURVE TETRA GRIP handrims suited for?Designed specifically for tetraplegics with triceps function, and suitable for wheelchair users with complete hand function but limited hand strength.
What are the advantages of the CURVE TETRA GRIP handrims?Being larger than conventional round profiles, this innovative profile provides tetraplegics with triceps function with a gripping surface optimised for exerting considerably more pressure on the handrim. As a result, propelling the wheelchair along a flat road and uphill requires less physical effort while being much gentler on the joints, and ensures better and more secure wheelchair handling. Along with the extremely durable anti-slip coating, the handrims make riding and steering your wheelchair much safer. When braking, the larger gripping surface helps to distribute the pressure much better and thus reduces heat generation.
What is the manufacturer’s recommendation in terms of profile size?Generally, we recommend using the CURVE L TETRA GRIP handrim to all tetraplegics with triceps function.

The shape of the CURVE push rim is designed to support limited arm and finger function. For the first time, the innovative profile offers greater contact and pressing area on the push rim, due to its bigger size compared with a conventional round hand rim section.

Curve Tetra-Grip and Curve Tetra-Grip Large are optimised for people with tetraplegia, but are also suitable for any wheelchair user who prefers rubberised hand rims.
Two push rim sizes:
Curve Tetra-Grip Large is a very ergonomic hand rim with a rubberised coating.  With its height of profile of 35 mm, Curve Grip L is especially made for average and larger hands.
Curve Tetra-Grip is a smaller version of this ergonomic design with a rubberised coating. With its height of profile of 28 mm, Curve Grip is especially made for smaller hands.

Who is the Quadro push rim suited for?For tetraplegics without triceps function.
What are the advantages of the Quadro push rims?Designed with the biomechanics of tetraplegics with no triceps function in mind, the profile of the QUADRO provides you with a considerably larger gripping surface than a conventional handrim. Featuring an extremely robust anti-slip coating, it offers you unsurpassed grip for efficient propulsion as well as maximum control during braking and when correcting the direction of travel.
